Vaishnav College for Women has always been committed towards the cause of empowerment of women by promoting sports and fostering top-ranking players for the nation, thereby carving a niche for itself in the arena of sports.
To provide a platform for budding sports players, M.O.P. is launching a state-level inter-school athletic meet for girls. The inaugural edition will be held on the 7th and 8th of January, 2019 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Periamet, Chennai.
The athletic meet will be inaugurated by Dr.P.Nagarajan, Superintendent of GST and Central Excellence- Athletic Coach. (Chief Minister’s awardee for Best Athletic Coach)
The Valedictory function will take place on 8th January, Tuesday, at 5 p.m. and Thiru.P.Balakrishna Reddy, Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Government of Tamil Nadu, will grace the occasion as the Chief guest. The Guests of Honour for the same include, Selvi.V.Jayalakshmi, Manager at Indian Bank, Olympian, and Mrs.V.S.Surekha, Welfare Inspector, Southern Railway, National record holder in Polevault.
Events will be conducted in two categories: senior and super-senior.
There are nine events, including 100M, 400M, 1500M, 3000M, Long Jump, High Jump, Shotput, 4*100M Relay and Medley Relay.
The objective of conducting this athletic meet is twofold: one, to provide exposure to students from semi-urban and rural districts and spread awareness about the opportunities awaiting them here at M.O.P; and two, to convert prospective medal-achieving sportswomen and athletes into medal achievers.
“M.O.P. aspires to mark its name in the list of Olympic medalists from India. This is its Olympic dream,” said Dr. Lalitha Balakrishnan, principal, M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women, at a press meet organised on Jan. 4.
M.O.P.'s sports students are known to bring laurels to the college, state and nation. Over the years, many of them have also been recognized with awards by Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers. The institution's coaches are also known for their dedicated and intensive training.
M.O.P. strives to bring in athletes from various districts and mould them into national and international medalists. Our achievers include Asian Games medalists like Sunaina Kuruvilla in Squash and Varsha Gautham in Sailing.
M.O.P. aspires to be a stepping stone for every sportswoman, and is the first college to organise a state-level inter-school athletic meet.
The winners at the meet will be awarded cash prizes: Rs.1000, Rs.750, and Rs.500 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively.
A best athlete prize will also be awarded for each of the two categories, senior and super-senior.
